What Is Varicocele?

  • Date:

A varicocele is a group of enlarged veins in the scrotum, above the testicle, a little like varicose veins in the leg. It is common and more often found on the left side.

Symptoms

Many men have no symptoms and find out during a check-up. Others notice:

  • A dull ache or heaviness in the scrotum, often worse after standing for long
  • A visible or palpable lump of veins
  • A smaller testicle on the affected side

Why it matters

A varicocele may be associated with discomfort, changes in the testicle, or male infertility. Not every varicocele causes a problem.

Diagnosis

A doctor can usually find it on physical examination. An ultrasound scan may be used to confirm the diagnosis and to look at the testicles.

Treatment

Treatment is not needed for every varicocele. It may be considered if there is persistent pain, a difference in testicular size, or fertility concerns. Options include procedures to close the affected veins, and your urologist will explain which one may suit you.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for any testicular pain, lump, swelling, or if you are having difficulty conceiving. Testicular conditions should always be examined.
