As men get older, changes in the prostate, bladder and kidneys can affect urination and quality of life. Many of these problems are treatable, and they should not be dismissed as simply part of ageing.
Common problems
- Enlarged prostate (BPH), with a weak stream, frequency and night-time urination.
- Urinary tract infections, which may show up as confusion or tiredness instead of burning in some older people.
- Urinary incontinence and an overactive bladder.
- Kidney and bladder stones.
- Blood in urine, which always needs evaluation.
- Prostate cancer, which often causes no early symptoms.
- Erectile difficulties.
Staying healthy
- Drink enough fluids unless you have been told to limit them.
- Stay active and keep a healthy weight.
- Review your medicines with your doctor, as some affect urination.
- Keep up with regular check-ups, including blood pressure and diabetes control.
When to seek care
Book a consultation for a weak stream, getting up several times a night, leakage, burning, blood in urine, pain or any change that worries you. Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine.
Family members can help by noticing changes and encouraging a visit to the doctor.
