Is Frequent Urination Always a Prostate Problem?

  • Date:

Many men who need to pass urine often think straight away of the prostate. Prostate enlargement is one possible cause, but it is far from the only one, and women and younger people can have the same symptom.

Other causes of frequent urination

  • Urinary tract infection, which often comes with burning.
  • Overactive bladder, where the bladder gives a strong urge even when it is not full.
  • Diabetes, because high blood sugar makes the body pass more urine.
  • Drinking a lot of fluid, or a lot of tea, coffee or alcohol, especially in the evening.
  • Some medicines, such as those that increase urine output.
  • Bladder stones or other bladder conditions.

Clues that can help

  • A weak stream and difficulty starting suggest a flow problem such as prostate enlargement.
  • Burning suggests infection or irritation.
  • A strong, sudden urge suggests an overactive bladder.
  • Passing large volumes may point to excess fluid intake or diabetes.

These clues are only a guide. A proper evaluation is needed to find the cause.

What to do

Keep a simple diary for a few days: when you drink and when you pass urine. This helps your doctor. Tests may include a urine test, a blood test and an ultrasound scan.

Book a consultation if the problem is new, getting worse, or affecting your sleep and daily life.
